The aim of our project is to ensure access to justice for the victims of sexual violence. On the one hand, we aim to raise
awareness regarding sexual crimes. We want to have social media campaign to remove taboo from sexual assaults, to empower women victims of sexual crimes and to raise gender sensitivity of the justice system. On the other hand we want to help investigative and prosecution bodies to deepen their knowledge with regards to sexual crimes in order to make the investigation, prosecution and litigation of sexual violence crimes more effective.
Union Sapari will cooperate with professionals from the Prosecutor’s Office and Ministry of Internal Affairs in developing better guidelines and organizing trainings for law enforcers. Often the failure to effectively investigate the case is partly due to the perception that sexual violence crimes are cause by victim’s behavior and are not real crimes. The problem also lies within the police, who are not capable to
identify the evidence of sexual violence, most of the time they see the crime as “she said, he said” case, where it is impossible to detect the truth. Furthermore, one of the most problematic issues is gender bias towards women, who live free sexual lives, frequently law enforcers believe that if women had voluntary sexual relationships out of wedlock it is impossible for this kind of women to be raped.
