Courtyard Marriott hosted the presentation of Sapari research “Femicide – Hate Crime and the State’s Obligation to Combat It”.
The authors Marie Kurtanidze and Baia Pataraia talked about the importance of the issues raised in the study. The research prepared by Sapari aims to raise awareness on femicide and state obligations: to prepare the analysis of international standards in connection with femicide and positive obligations of a state, which will help the relevant authorities to appropriately act on the facts of violence against women in order to avoid fatal results; And in case the murder of women is established, to state the link between the murder and gender discrimination, and be aware of positive obligations of the state recognized by various international instruments.
According to the authors of the survey, given the deplorable condition in the country in terms of femicide, a special unit has to be created within the Ministry of Internal Affairs that will work on crimes committed on the ground of gender. This is the only way that makes possible to decrease crime rate or to eliminate it altogether. It’s worth noting that on November 25 this year, at the rally held by the Women’s Movement the same demands were made against the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The research “Femicide – Hate Crime and the State’s Obligation to Combat It” was carried out by “Sapari” with the financial support of Open Society Georgia and Women’s Fund.
