In the United Nations Geneva HQ, the Union organization “Sapari” presented a shadow report on women’s rights in Georgia within the second cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (for the full text of the report see). The report was prepared within the coalition with the participation of the following NGOs: Human Rights Education and Monitoring Center (EMC), Women’s Initiatives Supporting Group (WISG), Georgian Young Lawyers Association (GYLA), Identity, and Hera XXI.
The talk was made by Baia Pataraia, executive director of “Sapari”, who talked about women’s situation in Georgia. The report consisted of three parts: violence against women, women’s political empowerment, status of marginalized women.
The UN 71 member states took part in the discussion of the report about Georgia. On November 20, 2015, at the Universal Periodic Review Session the UN member states gave recommendations to the Government of Georgia.
Remarkable emphasis was made by different states on the status of women’s rights in Georgia. Among them one should note the recommendations:
- on the promotion and protection of women’s rights, and effective implementation of relevant law
- effective measures taken in connection with the increase of number of the women-victims of family violence, and with the common practice of early marriages in the country
- on the necessity of working in terms of violence against women and gender equality in Georgia
- on the necessity of involvement of more women in country’s public life and decision-making process
Within the framework of the Universal Periodic Review, all the UN member states will discuss the current human rights situation once every 4-5 years.
