“Support to Prevention of Harmful Practices against Women and Girls in Kakheti and Kvemo Kartli Regions”

The project aims to operate in two main directions: a) Awareness raising campaign for prevention of harmful practices of early/child marriage and gender-biased sex selection  in 35 selected secondary schools of Kvemo Kartli and 9 secondary schools in Kakheti region, with the active involvement of the ethnic Azerbaijani adolescents/youth and their parents; b) Advocacy with the heads of local municipalities of these regions for mobilizing their active support for prevention of harmful practices against women and girls.

Project outcomes: 

  • Local Decision makers can identify problems related to early marriage, and gender-biased sex selection and they are able to find effective ways of problem solving and their sensitivity toward the topic is raised.
  • 8 Azerbaijani youth is trained and equipped with all the relevant information about gender, about women’s and children’s rights, about harmful practices of early marriage and gender-biased sex selection.
  • Students and parents in Kakheti schools (7-12 classes) and parents in Kvemo Kartli attended informative meetings. Thus, school administration, parents, teachers and students are aware about the early marriage problem and about prevention mechanisms. They know whom to address the problem. Schools have deeper understanding on the importance of creating enabling environment to allow married adolescent to complete education
  • Awareness in society on early marriage problem is relatively raised. TV and radio programmes are actively involved in raising population awareness.
